Downs syndrome

Down’s syndrome is a genetic condition which causes some level of learning difficulty and has characteristic physical features. The NHS reports that approximately 775 children per year are born with Down’s syndrome.

Every child with Down’s syndrome will have some degree of learning difficulty; however, the extent of that learning difficulty can vary significantly.

In our experience, it is entirely possible for most children with Down’s syndrome to develop independent living skills. In order to do so children will require early intervention working towards a modified education, good healthcare and support groups.

It is important for all professionals working with a child with Down’s syndrome to understand their specific abilities and difficulties. In our experience, all children with Down’s syndrome have special educational needs (SEN). In some cases, SEN additional support is adequate, although that is very rare. It is normally necessary for a child with Down’s syndrome to be supported with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
